The Mouth Of Truth
Since 1632 La Bocca della Verita, a cracked marble disk shape face image, could be found in the portico of church Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, Italy. According to Romans belief, the Bocca represents the image of ancient God Oceanus of stream Tiber. In English language, Bocca della Verita means Mouth of Truth. Its unique name is an indication of its famous characteristic to give the clear and obvious sworn statement in the favor of fair person and to punish a liar by biting off his / her hand. It was strongly believed that if an individual is telling a lie while placing his hand in the mouth of Bocca, must be bitten off as a punishment and evidence of his sin.
Thousands of visitors from every area of the world used to lease an Appartement à Rome and flock towards Bocca trying to find truth and in satiation of their inner curiosity, especially those who were suspicious about the fidelity of their partner. Not only those people who need to take a clear sworn statement in favor or against somebody used to assemble there, but a massive crowd of people also used to come there only for looking the whole process of lie detection. But fortuitously or sadly, Bocca does not work anymore because once a troublesome women succeeded in fooling her partner even by putting her hand in Bocca. Since that day, when Bocca was duped by that cunning girl, nobody saw} that superb show of reality.
The Mouth of Truth gained renown in English speaking audience when it was first employed in a film named as Romen vacation in 1953. In that film Bocca was presented as a storytelling image as both main characters of the film, Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn were not fair to one each other at the original stages of story. That scene was duplicated twice, once in 2000 in a Japenese film Sleeping Bride and once in a film Only You. Robert Silverberg has in addition used the unique credibility of Bocca in his novel, Nightwings. This novel was also credited with Hugo Award.
Though two years have flown by that Bocca hasn't bitten any liars hand placed in his mouth, but still the number of visitors coming to go to it hasn't been influenced in at any rate. La Bocca della Verita, a strange Roman statue with its open mouth and wide eyes is still a focus of attraction and a best holiday maker destination for legions of people coming to Rome everyday looking for an Appartement Vacances a Rome to explore its beauty and grandeur.
